Lincoln's Father lived here

Dear Parents,
As I reflect back on the past 18 years, there are a few things I have observed. One is that when I looked back at  my school years. The history teachers I had in school were not history majors. They and the history teachers majors I did have were just not interested in the subject.
As I have traveled around this great nation I have meet many very good history teachers. One thing always come up in talking with them. Students in their classes are as a general rule not interested in history. It takes them weeks, sometimes months to develop that interest. A serious waste of time.

I real believe that we as parents should, at least one time each year. Take our children to a Historical Place or Historical Event. Before you attend, take a little time and find out something about the place or event. A little time on your part will go a long way in having a great impact on your children and believe it or not you too.

What can you and I do about this problem? Get an interest in the subject yourself. It's almost impossible to convey to your children something you have no interest in. How do I do that you ask?

  1. Visit an important place in History. There are few places in this country that don't have a historical site or building, near by.
  2. Visit a reenactment of some kind of event. Revolutionary war, War of 1812, Civil War, 2nd World War, etc.
  3. Visit a local history place.
  4. Invite a reenactor to your school, community event, club, church, etc..
Doing these simple things will improve your Family's interest in History. This will most time increase your children's grades in History and sometimes other subjects as well. Beyond that it will help in understanding our country and how it works. Making them a better citizen and community member.
After 18 years as a living historian I have talked with thousands of young and old. Hundreds of them return over and over again. Each time they get more and more fascinated. Many have returned to  tell me that they became interested in history after there visit to my camp. Some have even become reenactors themselves. At the very worst, you will have a good time.
I  challenge you to plan a visit starting right now.
