NOVEMBER LETTER

This Story is reprinted from "THE LINCOLNIAN" the September - October issue of LINCOLN GROUP OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, INC.

Steve Carson recently received "some ink" in a Washington Post article by Bill Broadway (June 29, 2002 edition, page B9) on the tower and bells at the New York Presbyterian Church. Broadway reported that "few in the congregation were aware that the tower was donated by Mary Harlan Lincoln in memory of her husband, Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham." The church bells also have a Lincoln connection. The chimes were the gift of Robert and Mary Lincoln's daughter, Mary Lincoln Isham "in honor of her grandfather who rented a pew at the church and attended in the last years of his life." Old-time church members "remembered annual tributes once given to Lincoln at the church." To them the bells are known as "the Lincoln chimes." Steve noted the significance of the bells and tower in that these are "the immediate family's 'only memorial to father and grandfather."' The largest of the chimes, "looking remarkedly like the Liberty Bell," bears the following inscription:

To the Glory ofGod
And In Memory of Abraham Lincoln
Who Worshipped in this Church
When President of the United States
This Set of Bells Was
Presented by
Mary Lincoln Isham
February 12, 1929
New York Presbyterian Church
Washington, D.C.

The story "resurfaced" after "bell-and-clock specialist Keith Clark led "a rare tour of the belfry." Participants including Terry Lynch of the Downtown Cluster of Congregations "climbed a small iron ladder to. ..the base of the steeple." Discovery of the inscription resulted in an inquiry by Lynch to the Lincoln Group to learn the identity of Mary Isham. Clark himself had "done extensive research on the Lincolns and Ishams" and considers the inscription "a snapshot of history ." He sees the gift of the tower "in part from the intense love Mary and her daughter had for Robert Lincoln." He believes the choice of the church as the site for the memorial came from Mary's desire "to mark his achievements apart from those of his father."
Broadway also relates that "synchronization of the movement of the pendulum, to ensure proper timing of the chimes, is done by adding or taking away little weights: Lincoln pennies." He notes that "this particular week there were eight -one dated 1926 when Robert Lincoln died and one, 1929, when the tower and bells were dedicated."
