In 1979 I became angry with my employer and decided to grow a beard. It seemed the only way to convince my boss I was angry. The following Monday when I was servicing the first grocery store on my route. I entered the first store that I was to service that day. The first greeting I heard was "HI ABE". It seems, as I remember back, that all the people that day addressed me the same way.

I left that employer a week or two later. But the beard remained. And so did the fascination with the 16th President. I began to study and read as much as I could about this great man.

In 1988 President Ronald Reagan asked me to dress as the 16th President and appear
with Him in Bowling Green, Ohio. The event was for Vice President George Bush who was running for His high office. I was taken aback by the impact I had on people. The high school students who were there were affected in a way that surprised me.

When I got home that day I ordered the proper clothes. The next time to dress as President Lincoln was for the Civil War reenactment in Jackson Michigan. That event, one of the largest in the midwest, got me off to a good start. Adding a few dates each year, I now do about 140 appearances a year.
